Aristides Distilling launches AORATOS dry gin!

It’s with great honor and pleasure that we present AORATOS dry gin, the first of a series of Gin recipes released by Aristides Distilling. Smooth, complex, and very aromatic, AORATOS dry gin is distilled using wild juniper berries (known as AORATOS in Cyprus) and 10 other local botanicals that are grown organically on the island of Cyprus.

Inspired by the world-famous botanicals that grow on the island of Cyprus, AORATOS dry gin is a testament to the aromas and the essence of the Cypriot mountain nature. AORATOS dry gin is a premium small-batch, dry gin handcrafted by Aristides Distillery, combining 10 organic, local hand-picked botanicals. It is the first dry gin, sourced, produced, distilled, and bottled in Cyprus. Gentle, complex, and aromatic, AORATOS is selectively distilled with wild juniper berries of endemic species, locally known as “Aoratos”, Coriander, Angelica root, Nettle leaves, Iron wort, Sage, Rosemary and more. These precious local ingredients make a distinctive blend, which is a unique expression of the heart and soul of the Cyprus mountains.

  • Nose: Surprisingly warm and fresh. The juniper is surrounded by rosemary and the almost musky smell of sage.[/btx_quote]
  • Taste: A very smooth few first seconds give way to an explosion of warm almost umami-like flavors of the Cypriot botanicals. Fresh citrus harmonizes with the sun-dried herbs, while the juniper perfectly combines with the more iron-like taste of the iron-wort. The result is like a walk through the mountains on a hot day, feet firmly on the rich mineral grounds, nose delighted by the warmed-up spices.
  • Finish: Long and hearty. The juniper and iron-wort stay on the tongue for some time, while the citrus slowly sinks to the background.

Aristides Distilling

Establishing Aristides Distilling in Cyprus is the second part of a journey that began in southern Missouri around 2008, in a place called Walnut Shade somewhere in the Ozark Mountains where co-founder Aris Aristidou started a successful collaboration at Copper Run Distillery, the first craft distillery in the Ozark Mountains since prohibition! At Copper Run Aris and Jim became partners and together landed 3 spirit awards by the American Distilling Institute and they were later joined by co-founder Marianna Ktoridou Aristidou in 2013 and expanded spirit sales throughout the entire state, featuring a wide variety of Whiskeys and Rums.

In 2016, Aris and Marianna left Missouri and returned to Cyprus to embark on a new craft distillery project, in Cyprus. After a 2 year period of research, planning, and lots of problem-solving, they started putting together their own craft distillery early in 2019 and finally begun operations on 01/01/2020.

This new type of craft distillery is focused on better, more accurate, and more advanced distilling process methods, with more quality controls thus minimizing guesswork and chance. This is what we at Aristides Distilling call the new age of a craft distilling!
